None wrong. Everyone right?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you are in a discussion and you know that while you are right, there isn’t really a fault with the other side either? Rise of the concept of ‘lateral thinking’ has given rise to this now often experienced scenario. And for most of us, it plainly feels confusing to deem which one is more suitable for approach in the long run.

Welcome to Narrating The Dream and this time, I am here for the weird situations we find ourselves in due to the effects of lateral thinking.

Lateral thinking. The approach of looking to solve a problem from more than one methods. The advantage of this has been immeasurable in the present when people can finally find and accept that they have options on how to proceed with any issue. Multiple choices sound like a good thing, no?

Consider a simple situation: in a struggling startup, there’s a meeting going on. One says, “We should sacrifice the extra skills for now and develop what we want to be the base product.”

Another disagrees. “I say we go for beta releases with people helping in the development.”

From the owner’s point of view, they are both right but how does one choose?

Listing the pros and cons won’t help either because undeniable advantages and disadvantages fall on the sides of both of the solutions.

A perfect compromise can’t be reached in every situation due to some factors that we cannot deal with. So what do we do? Give in despite being owner of a great point? Or fight and be a stuck up who is unwilling to ever cede a point?

And herein lies the trick for the balance you need to seek is up to you to determine. You need to plan well and ahead into the future so that you (and then others) choose the less favorable one.

What if you are your own opponent? How do you decide which idea of yours to pick? How do you reject?

When it boils down to a matter of convenience, it would seem best to just choose one and get it over with. But as I said before, it is always about finding that balance. For when you speak up with an idea (and it is better to speak up than later lament about your hesitation), you become one of the most important person in that conversation and you need to make sure that the place where you will lead the discussion is where it ought to go.
